6 Towns and Villages in the Peak District

We’re doing a three part series covering the Peak District as we spend so much time here. This post is about all the villages we have been to within the Peak District.

Matlock

Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire. Once famed for its hydro and spa treatments, Matlock's central location, scenic surroundings and public transport links make it a popular base for exploring the best of the Peak District and Derbyshire.

Bakewell

Known as the heart of the Peak District and set on the pretty banks of the River Wye, Bakewell is a magnet for painters, photographers and sightseers alike. Visitors can look forward to scenic riverside walks, a wealth of heritage and history, and storybook stone buildings home to independent shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes.

Ashford in the Water

Located in the heart of the White Peak along the River Wye, the chocolate box village of Ashford-in-the-Water is home to the medieval Sheepwash Bridge - the most photographed bridge in Britain. Sheepwash Bridge has been named as the best location in the country to play the much-loved game of ‘Poohsticks’. We played and much to Phoebe’s disappointment Chris won.

Castleton

It is surrounded by stunning scenery, nestled in the hills at the western end of the Hope Valley, and has something to offer for everyone. For outdoor enthusiasts Castleton is the perfect gateway to the moorland and hill trails over Kinder Scout, Mam Tor and the Great Ridge, and its many cave systems will appeal to adventurous kids of all ages.  Visitors who prefer a gentle pace of exploration will enjoy wandering through its narrow lanes, browsing the independent shops and sampling the fare in the many tea rooms, restaurants and pubs.

Milldale

Milldale is a gorgeous hamlet that lies in a rural area of the White Peak Estate in the Peak District National Park. It’s an idyllic and peaceful village that lies on the border of Derbyshire and Staffordshire and is somewhere you cannot miss on your visit.

Imagine gorgeous historic cottages tucked amongst the rolling hills of the countryside, ducks roaming free and a scenic river that babbles beside the hamlet. Although it’s small, it’s a beautiful retreat and the perfect place to take one of the many hikes that you can find in the dramatic Dove Valley.

Tissington

The unspoilt estate village of Tissington surrounds a splendid Jacobean residence, Tissington Hall. Throughout the town visitors will find quaint limestone cottages with perfectly manicured gardens, as well as a fine church and duck pond - it is quite possibly as near to rural idyll as you can get.
