What to do on the Isle of Mull
We have been to the Isle of Mull a couple times together now. We are home bodies on Mull and will spend everyday doing the same thing, so there are so many other things to do on Mull which we hope to cover in the future.
Calgary Bay
Calgary bay is by far our favourite beach on the island. It is the only place we visit everyday without fail. Phoebe even moved where we were going to stay so it was like ten minutes from the beach. Park in the main carpark and walk down the path to the beach. You will find all sorts of people on this beach from dog walkers to swimmers.
Uisken Beach
We’ve been to Uisken beach once as its at the very south of the island and we tend to be in the north. It is a stunning white sand beach; there were a lot of jellyfish when we visited in July, so please take this in to account. We enjoyed a paddle at the far end with our old dog Flash.
Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse
This short walk follows an excellent path through the woods from Tobermory out to the picturesque lighthouse at Rubha nan Gall. There are great views over the water to Ardnamurchan. You can either return the same way, or via a rougher, steeper route that runs higher along the hillside before skirting the golf course to return to Tobermory. We stuck to the same path to stay along the water.
Dun Ara and Glengorm Castle
This out-and-back walk leads from the splendid Glengorm Castle across the pastures to the site of an old fort at Dùn Ara on the coast. There are wide sea views, with perhaps the opportunity to spot an otter or - for the brave - try a dip in the open sea 'bathing pool'. Make sure to wear appropriate shoes as the walk can be slippery and muddy. All of the hurdles are worth the view out to the open sea (not that we saw it through the fog) and all the Heilen Coos - if you go at the right time of year you’ll see baby coos too!
Make sure to stop off at the coffee shop on the way out for lunch or homemade cakes.
Tobermory
Tobermory is the main town on Mull, it is best known for being the set of Balamory. Ignoring this it is the best place to get food for your time on the island, there are also quite a few independant stores along the main street. We particularly like the whiskey distillery and chocolate shop. There is also an all vegetarian cafe here which has some great food - An Tobar Cafe.
Isle of Iona
To reach it, board the passenger ferry from Fionnphort to Baile Mòr which takes only 10 minutes to cross the sound. You can not take your car so be preared to walk everywhere, luckily it’s not a very big island.
You won’t believe your eyes when you reach Iona’s beaches. Head north out of the village past the Abbey and you’ll reach two beauties within a mile or so at Iona’s northernmost tip, which are rarely ever crowded. We went to the right through some fields and went for a dip in the aqua water.
